A Record Breaking 38 Oregon High Schools, Participate in Poetry Out Loud

"Poetry Out Loud is a wonderful way for students to gain an appreciation of great poetry," said Deb Vaughn, arts education coordinator for the Oregon Arts Commission. "To 'own' a poem through practiced recitation is an experience students will carry with them for years to come."
Poetry Out Loud is a nationwide poem recitation contest where students memorize and deliver poems-practicing public speaking and examining the intricacy of poetry. Poetry Out Loud is organized by Oregon Arts Commission, NEA, and the Poetry Foundation.
Oregon students from 38 high schools in 18 Oregon communities will take part in the contest. 365,000 students are expected to participate nationwide.
Students first compete in a school-wide recitation contests, with each winner qualifying in to compete in one of three regional contests on March 7th. The top three winners in each region will move to state contest in Salem on March 14th.
Judges for the 2015 Poetry Out Loud competition include; Poet Stephanie Lenox, actor and radio personality Ann McBride, and performing arts journalist Marty Hughley (to name a few).
The state champion will receive an all-expenses-paid trip (with a chaperone) to Washington, D.C to compete in the national finals, as well as $200 scholarship and $500 for the winner's school library poetry collection.
