Award Winning Ensemble to Perform in Portland

Bells of the Cascades, a Portland handbell ensemble, will perform compositions from their 25th anniversary contest on Saturday, October 10 at Central Lutheran Church.  

"Out of the Silent Planet," part of the composition contest, was chosen out of 21 other submissions. The composer of the piece, Alex Guebert, was awarded the grand prize. Bells of the Cascades will perform several other top compositions as well.   
 
Bells of the Cascades have performed three concerts thus far. Their upcoming concert is a celebration of their 25th anniversary, featuring new music and Portland based guest handbell groups—Portland Boychoir and Handbells of Concordia University. 

Founded in 1990, Bells of the Cascades, is a non-profit that supports their music through merchandise sales. They have previously performed with other musical ensembles such as Masterworks Chorale of Olympia, Willamette Master Chorus of Salem, the Singing Christmas Tree, and the Jewish Community Orchestra.

The colorful characters are complemented by Michael Bottari and Ronald Case’s imaginative costumes – from zoot suits to show girls to the Salvation Army – bringing audiences back to 1940s and the mythical “Runyeonland.”

A true Broadway classic, Guys and Dolls has stood the test of time, and continues to be adored by audiences of all ages. The show premiered in November 1950 – a production that won five Tony Awards including Best New Musical – and has been revived many times, both on Broadway and London’s West End. It was also the inspiration for the 1955 film starring Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra.
