David Bowie Doc Lands at Hollywood Theater

Wednesday, August 27, 2014

David Bowie is taking over Portland’s stage and screen.

The documentary "David Bowie Is" screens Sept. 23 at Portland's Hollywood Theater. Just three weeks later, White Bird Dance unleashes the first-ever Portland appearance of iconoclastic British dance legend Michael Clark and his six-member company performing his critically acclaimed "come, been and gone," primarily using music and video by Bowie, as well as Iggy Pop and others.

"David Bowie Is " details an exhibition created by London’s Victoria and Albert Museum (currently touring the world with stops across the U.S.) that's a treasure trove of Bowie’s out-there and outré stage costumes/personas as well as photos and other fascinating memorabilia from a musical/visual artist who continues to fascinate the world.

According to its creators, who filmed the closing night of the exhibition, this filmic tour of the show allows viewers to see what makes Bowie tick.

The one-time only September screening in Portland is just one of 100 taking place nationwide. It is the same day the exhibit makes its stateside premiere at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art.

The film provides “insight into the most memorable music videos and original costumes, as well as more personal items, such as never-before-seen handwritten lyrics, album cover artwork, set designs and diary entries, which reveal the creativity and evolution of Bowie’s ideas," according to the Hollywood Theater.

“David Bowie Is” screens 7:30 pm Tues., Sept. 23, Hollywood Theater, 4122 NE Sandy Blvd. Tickets available here.

Michael Clark Company’s “come, been and gone," White Bird Dance, 7:30 pm, Thurs.-Sat., Oct. 16-18
Newmark Theatre, 1111 SW Broadway Tickets available here
