The Portland Opera’s 50th anniversary season concludes with a special production of Gaetano Donizetti’s, The Elixir of Love, a romantic comedy set in the 1880s during the American Wild West.

As part of the end of season celebration, there will be a day-long street fair on August 1 prior to an outdoor simulcast of The Elixir of Love. The production will be performed in the Newmark Theatre on July 17, 19, 23 and 30, with a special outdoor concluding production on August 1. The Elixir of Love will be the company’s seventh opera production performed at the Newmark Theatre, with several of the performances previously sold out.

Among those performing include Katrina Galka as Adina, Matthew Grills as Nemorino, Alexander Elliott as Belcore and Steven Condy as Dr. Dulcamara. The production will be in Italian (English subtitles included).

The Elixir of Love by Donizetti was originally composed in 1832 with it’s first world premiere performed in Teatro della Canobbiana, Milan on May 12, 1832. It first premiered in Portland on March 6, 1975. Donizetti has composed over 70 operas in his 25-year career, with genres varying from tragedy to comedy and romance.
