Thursday, October 01, 2015

In October of 2004, the Doug Fir opened in its lower East Burnside neighborhood and made a dramatic splash in Portland’s music scene. Between its close proximity to the Jupiter Hotel and its comfortable PNW-log-cabin-meets-50s-airport-modernism design, Doug Fir Lounge has made itself an iconic Portland venue and restaurant/bar.

In these past eleven years Doug Fir Lounge has grown from sapling to tall tree - sponsoring all kinds of events around this city including most recently the Vegan Beer & Food Fest - and next week is all about celebrating that growth.

The week long party kicks off Monday, October 5 and goes through Sunday, October 11 with food and drink specials and a contest.

Attend any show during their anniversary week and fill out an entry form to win a show pass for two to every 2016 Doug Fir concert. This incredible prize is guaranteed to set you up for a year of potentially good dates.

The bands playing during the anniversary week are Mikky Ekko, Spirit Family Reunion, Vieux Farka Toure, Patrick Watson, Minden, The Districts, Gang of Four, Strange Talk, The Wind + The Wave, and Bob Moses.

Doug Fir Lounge 11th Anniversary Week, October 5 - October 15, 830 E Burnside St. For more information, click HERE.

Jessica Jackson Hutchins: CONFESSIONS

Internationally recognized, Portland-based artist Jessica Jackson Hutchins is showing work in Portland this fall.  Confessions seeks to explore the relationship between making, collecting, and curating.  How is art cared for, circulated, and preserved?  This exhibit is split between two galleries – Reed’s Cooley Gallery and the lumber room in the Pearl – enabling Hutchins to examine these questions in collaboration with and in response to the separate spaces.  The exhibition is organized by Portland collector Sarah Miller Meigs and Cooley Gallery curator and director Stephanie Snyder.

The Cooley Gallery, Reed College and the lumber room, 419 NW 9th Ave. September 2 - November 8. For more information click HERE.

Curator-In-Residence: Chiara Giovando

Entering its fifth season, the Curator-In-Residence program welcomes Los Angeles-based curator and artist Chiara Giovando. Giovando has a vast background in sound art, having curated shows and arranged scores herself. “Sound is ephemeral, temporal, and pervasive; it has physicality yet it is intangible. It can soothe or irritate our organs, shatter glass, and map the depths of the ocean floor. Sound surrounds us, inspires us, and while it often brings us together, it may also confuse and disorient us,” says Giovando. “Disjecta's 2015-16 program will explore an expanded definition of sound, looking at historical experiments in musical notation, new sound art practices, and ways that sound functions in architecture and installation.”

Disjecta Contemporary Art Center, 8371 N Interstate Ave. September 1, 2015 - May 2, 2016. For more information click HERE.
