Heads up—it’s a doozy of a week, with over two dozen literary events to choose from. You know it’s no longer summer when suddenly you have a burst of readings, appearances, and discussions on the docket as opposed to a handful. Look them over, take your pick, and choose wisely!
MONDAY
Game designer and author Jane McGonigal will be at Powell’s at Cedar Hills sharing her new book SuperBetter, the story of how she turned her recovery from a severe concussion into a game that thousands of people now play to get better themselves. 3415 SW Cedar Hills Blvd., 7pm, FREE
At Powell’s on Hawthorne, Nick Holdstock will be reading from his debut novel The Casualties, in which a man who likes secrets recounts the final few weeks before an apocalyptic event hits his neighborhood. He will be joined in conversation by Marjorie Sandor, author of The Late Interiors. 3723 SE Hawthorne Blvd., 7:30pm, FREE
Floyd Skloot will be at Powell’s City of Books reading from his eighth poetry collection Approaching Winter, a contemplation of the ebb and flow of memory and the passage of time. 1005 W Burnside St., 7:30pm, FREE
TUESDAY
Powell’s City of Books will be hosting the launch event for Carmiel Banasky’s debut novel The Suicide of Claire Bishop, the story of a painting of a young woman who thought she was sitting for a portrait and instead received a picture of her suicide. 1005 W Burnside St., 7:30pm, FREE
WEDNESDAY
David Marquez, the artist for Marvel’s new comic series Invincible Iron Man will be at Things From Another World signing copies of the debut issue. 2916 NE Broadway St., 7-10pm, FREE
The IPRC will be putting on a poetry reading in honor of an earlier reading sixty years ago to the day at Gallery Six in San Francisco with poets Kenneth Rexroth, Phil Whalen, Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Philip Lamantia, and Mike McClure, where Ginsburg did his premier of “Howl”. To celebrate the anniversary, Portland’s six poets—Pancho Savery, Christopher Luna, Jen Coleman, Casey Bush, Sam Lohmann, and dan raphael— will be reading from both their own work and a poem from one of the original six, and the event will close with all participating poets reading “Howl”. 1001 SE Division St., 7-9:30pm, FREE
At Powell’s at Cedar Hills, Katherine Howe will be reading from her YA novel The Appearance of Annie Van Sinderen, a haunting summer New York love story between a filmmaker student and a mysterious girl with a dark secret. 3415 SW Cedar Hills Blvd., 7pm, FREE
Noted psychologist and popular science author Steven Pinker will be at Powell’s City of Books shareing his new writing guide titled The Sense of Style. 1005 W Burnside St., 7:30pm, FREE
Annie Bloom’s Books will be hosting Cindy Brown, who will be sharing the second book in her theatre mystery series titled The Sound of Murder in which Ivy Meadows struggles to balance acting in the new musical The Sound Cabaret and working as a PI, solving the mystery of a seeming suicide in a retirement community. The event will take place at “The Vault” at O’Connor’s Restaurant. 7850 SW Capitol Hwy, 7-9pm, FREE
Another Read Through will be hosting the book launch of local author Mandy Smith’s new memoir Secrets in Big Sky Country in which she tells her story of being a survivor of child sexual abuse. 3932 N Mississippi Ave., 7-8pm, FREE
At Broadway Books, Arn Strasser will be reading from his new collection of poetry and prose titled Before Dreaming. 1714 NE Broadway Ave., 7-8pm, FREE
Two science fiction authors published by Orbit will be at Powell’s at Cedar Hills: Hugo, Nebula, and Arthur C. Clarke award-winning author Ann Leckie will be reading from the final book in her trilogy Ancillary Mercy and veteran science-fiction author Greg Bear will be reading from his new novel Killing Titan. 3415 SW Cedar Hills Blvd., 7pm, FREE
At Powell’s on Hawthorne, Michael Golding will be presenting his new novel A Poet of the Invisible World, a spiritual story about a boy born in 13th-century Persia with four ears who comes of age in a Sufi order. 3723 SE Hawthorne Blvd., 7:30pm, FREE
Powell’s City of Books will be hosting a panel discussion with Mark Sten, author of All Ages: The Rise and Fall of Portland Punk Rock, 1977-1981, filmmaker/musician Mike Lastra, Poison Idea lead singer Jerry A., former club owner/promoter Fred Noize, Jungle Nausea singer/guitarist Tammy Cates, and the Neo Boys drummer Pat Baum. 1005 W Burnside St., 7:30pm, FREE
SATURDAY
At Powell’s City of Books, Roland Smith will be reading from his new book The Edge, the story of a fourteen year-old boy named Peak Marcello competing to be the youngest climber of Mt. Everest only to have his group attacked and most of the members killed or kidnapped. 1005 W Burnside St., 12pm, FREE
Later that afternoon, Tom Delonge, vocalist/songwriter for Blink-182 and Angels and Airwaves, will be at Powell’s City of Books for his young adult novel Poet Anderson ...of Nightmares, about a younger brother who sets out into the dream world to find his comma-ridden older brother and wake him up. In honor of Halloween, Another Read Through’s author panel will be a spooky mystery one, featuring local mystery authors Cindy Brown, Christine Finlayson, Jeanette Hubbard, Jean Sheldon, and Christina Weaver. 3932 N Mississipi Ave., 1:30-3pm, FREE
Prolific fantasy author Brandon Sanderson will be at Powell’s at Cedar Hills presenting the fifth book set in his Mistborn universe titled Shadows of Self, charting the evolution of Mistborn society amidst magic and technology in an analogous 19th-century American landscape. 3415 SW Cedar Hills Blvd., 6pm, FREE
SUNDAY
At Powell's City of Books, Sophia Amoruso, founder of the fashion retailer Nasty Gal, will be presenting her memoir #Girlboss, the story of going from hitchhiking and petty theft to selling vintage clothing on eBay to becoming the CEO of her own multi-million dollar company. 1005 W Burnside St., 2pm, FREE
