Portland’s American Music Program Takes Home First Place

The band chose to dedicate their performance to their director, Thara Memory, who has been in relatively poor health over the past few years due complications from his ongoing battle with diabetes.
In order to honor their director, the band decided to perform, “The Tattooed Bride,” from memory.
"There's an emotional commitment to playing 'Tattooed Bride' from memory. No professional group does that," said Maralis, JALC’s Managing and Artistic Director. "American Music Program wanted to play that for their band director, Thara Memory. They love him. They wanted him to feel it. ... For this band to play at that level, it was a great achievement."
As the winner of this competition the American Music Program of Portland was presented with a first-place trophy, as well as $5,000 during the finals concert at Frederick P. Rose Hall.
The Essentially Ellington is a three-day competition that featured 15 finalist bands that were chosen from 88 entries.
