Best Ultra-Luxury Car Brands
Thursday, March 10, 2016
Ultra-luxury cars are marvels of engineering; with captivating designs and jaw-dropping performance, brands like Rolls-Royce and Lamborghini push the boundaries of what a vehicle can achieve. While ultra-luxury brands won't ever win awards for fuel efficiency, they offer power in other, more extravagant, ways.
To identify the best ultra-luxury brands, AxleGeeks created an Ultra-Luxury Rating, which favored brands with the highest prices, greatest horsepower, greatest torque and lowest gas efficiency — we're looking for the lavish of the lavish. After ranking them based on their Ultra-Luxury Rating, we ordered the brands from lowest to highest score.
Note: All data is from March 2016. In the event of a tie, the brand with the greater horsepower won.
#7. Maserati
Ultra-Luxury Rating: 82
With an average price of $137,135 and horsepower of only 454, Maserati falls far behind top-performing brands like Lamborghini and Rolls-Royce. Additionally, its average torque, 387.5 foot-pounds, reaches only 77 percent of the ultra-luxury industry average.
#6. Aston Martin
Ultra-Luxury Rating: 85
Though Aston Martin’s average horsepower of 565 is in line with the ultra-luxury industry average of 549 HP, its torque (457 foot-pounds) and price (approximately $180,000) falls below par relative to other ultra-luxury brands.
#5. Bentley
Ultra-Luxury Rating: 87
Bentley’s best features are its horsepower and torque, both of which reach or surpass the averages set by other ultra-luxury brands. Its main weakness, however, is its price: $212,850 per model. The cost lowers its overall Ultra-Luxury Rating compared to other brands.
#4. McLaren
Ultra-Luxury Rating: 89
McLaren’s average of 641 horsepower places it far above the industry average, which sits at 549 HP. However, its fuel efficiency is a combined 19 miles per gallon, which makes it the most efficient brand listed, and therefore lowers its overall rank.
#3. Rolls-Royce
Ultra-Luxury Rating: 90
Rolls-Royce, the third-best ultra-luxury brand, comes at a cost: over $438,000. Its high price paired with its poor fuel efficiency and torque earned it an overall Ultra-Luxury Rating of 90, despite its low horsepower.
#2. Ferrari
Ultra-Luxury Rating: 90
Not surprisingly, Ferrari earned high marks for its averages in horsepower (651) and torque (509 foot-pounds). Though Ferrari shares an Ultra-Luxury Rating with Rolls-Royce and Lamborghini, its average horsepower earns it the second-place title.
#1. Lamborghini
Ultra-Luxury Rating: 90
Lamborghini earned its distinction as the best ultra-luxury brand due to its powerful lineup, as its models average 660 horsepower, the highest among its ultra-luxury competitors. Furthermore, its low fuel efficiency and average price of $353,438 per model contributed to Lamborghini’s overall rating.
