Portland Threads: Hats and Caps in PDX

Saturday, September 20, 2014

Fiona in a hat found in her mother's closet.

Portland Threads is GoLocalPDX weekly review of what Portlanders are wearing on the streets.

This week in Portland Threads, we catch sight of Portlanders wearing hats and caps, with a hand sewn blue dress, bright red jeans, and a paisley button down shirt.

Hats can add a mysterious, comical, or regal quality to any outfit. A hat is the perfect accessory to make you stand out amongst a bare-headed crowd.

For instance, Pharrell Williams' look at the Grammy’s wouldn’t have received much buzz if it weren’t for that comical “Arbys” hat. The bowler hats worn by Alex and the droogs in the 1971 film A Clockwork Orange, were the perfect accessories for the mischievous and sociopathic gang members. And Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton’s pill box hats are a sophisticated complement to her tailored coat dresses.

And don't forget their ultimate usefulness: At the end of the day, we all go back to that raggedy old baseball cap, 90’s bucket hat, or floppy sun hat, to cover up the bad haircut we just got or frizzy hair that doesn’t seem to stay down.
