Christmas Eve Run & Ride Brings Bikes to Kids in Need

Tuesday, December 23, 2014

GLPDX-fergusonrun

Join the Ferguson-Murphy Run on Christmas Eve and help support getting bikes to underprivileged kids.

Join the 40th Annual Ferguson-Murphy Run and Bike Ride on Christmas Eve and help kids in need get their first bike for Christmas.

Many cyclists and runners with time off this week look for a fun run or ride to take advantage of the extra free time. The Ferguson-Murphy Run and Ride is an event that benefits the both the event participants as well as the kids receiving bikes as holiday gifts.

The tradition began nearly 40 years ago as an early-morning run to celebrate the holidays and this year the run welcomes cyclists as well. Proceeds raised from run fees and sales of tee-shirts, as well as charitable donations go toward buying bikes for kids. The organizers have partnered with Bike Gallery to provide and assemble the bikes.

LifeWorks NW is handling registration and helping to coordinate getting the bikes to kids on Christmas Day. Registration fees include a t-shirt and continental breakfast after the event.

The event starts at 6:15 a.m. at the Multnomah Athletic Club. Participants are advised to be aware that streets will not be closed for this event; runners and riders should follow the rules of the road and obey traffic signals. Preregistration is required. Today is the last day for online registration.

Can't run or ride, but want to be a part of making some kid fantastically happy this Christmas? Donations are accepted in any amount on the registration web page.

When: December 24, 2014 6:15 a.m.
Where: Multnomah Athletic Club, 1849 SW Salmon, Portland

Register online: https://crnnw.ejoinme.org/?tabid=552097

Walter

Breed: Terrier / Mix
Gender: Male

Hi, my name is Walter! I am currently in foster care. If you are interested in me, please contact our Foster Coordinator at [email protected] or 503-988-6247 to set up a time to meet me! Here are some notes from my foster mom: "Walter is a sweet boy who has blossomed in a warm, loving environment after living on the streets of Portland. He is looking for a quiet and safe place to lie in the sun (or on your lap) and rest his bones. He's had a hard life and a chemical burn has left him with scars and no hair on his body. (He loves his fleece coat.) He is very food motivated which has allowed a lot of progress in teaching him to trust people again. He has made a 180! Walter is afraid of riding in cars and would be happy to be a home body. This old boy needs someone who wants to give him peace in his elder years. His days of walks and playing have been replaced with cuddling, a wag/bark of greeting, spirited meal time excitement, and a lot of naps. Please consider giving Walter a second shot at having a good life." I am housebroken and fine with other dogs and cats, though I should probably go to a home with dogs that won't step on me or try to play rough with me. My rear legs are atrophied so I use them both at the same time and get around fair. I can even use a stool to jump up on the sofa! I would like to be carried up and down more than 2 stairs so I don't hurt myself. My foster mom is working on my leash training, but I still have a ways to go before I have it totally figured out. I need to go out every 4-6 hours during the day so I would be most comfortable with someone that isn’t gone all day. I am mostly deaf but have gotten used to hand gestures. Please ask about me today! I need a place to call home for my last years

Porter

Breed: Domestic Shorthair/ Mix
Gender: Male
Age: Adult

Hey Porter, where ya heading? This handsome guy was found wandering lost outside, not a good place for a cool guy like Porter! He's 3-years-old, already neutered, and prefers a low-key existence - sunny places to nap, toys to play with when the mood strikes him, and a warm lap to cuddle on. He will fare best in a home with adults or older children; another mellow cat might work out with a nice, patient introduction. Other cats weren't very kind to Porter during his outdoor walk-about! Come down and meet this fantastic boy today.

Tinker Winker

Age: Adult

Hi there! My name is Tinker Winker and I am currently in foster care. If you are interested in me, contact Alix, the Foster Coordinator, at [email protected] or 971-201-1513 to set up a time to meet me! I don't do well with change, and it takes me a while to adjust to new places, so I will need patient adopters that will give me a week or two to come out of my shell. Once I get to know you, I am playful and very loving. Anyone with a lazer pointer will win me over in no time. I would like to go to a home with no other pets and kids 12 and older, or no kids. I am about 6 years old and weigh 8 pounds. Ask about me today!

I am great with my foster mom, and if you give me a couple of weeks to settle in (and lots of play time!) I will be great with you too. I love to play with my DaBird wand toy – my foster mom thinks the key to increasing my confidence is going lots and lots of play time and I agree! Ask about adopting me today!
