Despite having to deal with unexpected rain, over 500 bike riders and volunteers participated in the
American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure on Saturday, July 25th. Cyclists of all ages rode between 5 and 100 miles in an effort to raise awareness, and funds, that will go towards stopping the rise of diabetes within our community. This cycling and fundraising event raised around $400,000 for diabetes research, education and advocacy.
As it stands now Oregon and Southwest Washington have over 400,000 people who are dealing with this disease. There are another 1.1 million who have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes.
"Tour de Cure provides people with an opportunity to take an active role in the movement to Stop Diabetes through fundraising for a cure while committing to a day of a healthy activity with friends, family and colleagues," said Andrea Bruno, Executive Director of the American Diabetes Association of Oregon and Southwest Washington. "Our riders share their personal stories about living with diabetes and how this disease is 24/7 and never takes a break."
