Nattapon Chaimanonart, CEO of the Portland health-focused tech company
Ultra, Inc., has made a big splash with his first product, and should continue to do so in the future.
With a background in academic research and industrial intergraded circuit design, Nattapon was also an expert reviewer for peer reviewed journals and international conferences before starting Ultra, Inc. in Portland.
Ultra, Inc. specializes in wearable devices to monitor environmental conditions that impact health. Their first product, launched in early 2014, picked up national attention.
Called Violet, it’s the first device of its kind that monitors UV exposure, warns when there is a risk of sunburn, and calculates vitamin D levels for the wearer.
Chaimanonart and co-founder Nabyl Bennouri came up with the idea after Bennouri suffered from vitamin D deficiency. The product lines up with the company’s goal: create technology that helps people.
The company started a $100,000 Kickstarter Campaign for Violet in July 2014. Although they failed to reach their goal by $30,000, the campaign brought in over 1,000 orders for the product.
Media coverage of the Violet was picked up around the United States, with articles in Yahoo Finance and Market Wired about the device.
Chaimanonart also told the Portland Business Journal he was in talks with Samsung and Motorola about the device’s technology, which could lead to global distribution.
Chaimanonart and Ultra, Inc. have other ideas in the works to help increase health through technology. Some future projects could include a product to test chemicals in drinking water, technology to monitor air pollution, and devices to detect pollen allergies that people react to.
One of the nominees for the 2014 Portland Businesses Journal Business and Innovation Award, Chaimanonart has helped push his company forward in a short period of time. Both he and Ultra, Inc. should continue to produce innovating technology in the years to come.

Steve Novick
Steve Novick has been a lightning rod since he entered office in 2013.
Portland’s Transportation Commissioner has been at the center of two of the biggest stories at City Hall this year: the city’s response to the ridesharing company Uber and the Portland Street Fee.
Both issues have drawn heaps of criticism to City Hall. In both cases, Novick has been a feisty advocate for what he thinks is right - even if many people don’t agree with him.
Whether it’s facing down irate upper income homeowners who don’t want a fence building on the Vista Bridge, touching the third rail of politics (a new tax) or taking on scofflaw startups, Novick doesn’t shy away from a fight.
We assume 2015 will hand him plenty of opportunities to get into the ring.
He’s always been a man to watch, because you never know what he’s going to say.
