Penner-Ash Wine Cellars Offers New Wine Travel Experiences

Wine travel in the Willamette Valley is trending, and Penner-Ash Wine Cellars is at the forefront of wine country exploration with new offers for those looking for a weekend escape this summer or fall.

Owners Lynn and Ron Penner-Ash have developed a number of new chances to encounter both private and public wine tasting created in collaboration with esteemed local chefs, caterers, and restaurants.

New tasting and touring offerings are varied but also affordable for drop-in visitors. There are two complimentary tours daily from 11:30 through 2:30 pm that go behind the scenes of the winemaking process. Additionally, library wine tastings are also available for drop-in visitors with an available flight of three select older vintages of Pinot noir at the new Library Bar located in the Fireside Room ($25 per person).

Private winery tours include a flight of five different wines that you can try for $35 and with an added lunch ($70). Match this private tour with a guided hike around the Estate Vineyards to familiarize yourself with the viticultural practices of the winery. Reservations are required for the private winery tours.

If you are interested in private seated tastings of six wines on Penner-Ash's fermentation deck within the working winery, you only have to pay $40. If accompanied with a walking tour, the price goes up slightly to $50; with the addition of trying some Pas de Nom limited availability library wines, the price is then $75 per individual.

Penner-Ash Wine Cellars also offers fine dining in addition to wine tasting and there are luncheon and dinner opportunities for business and social groups on multiple levels.

Watch out for their seven-course Gastronomic Tasting Menu by Chef Christopher Dahl from the Art of Catering which utilizes Penner-Ash Wine Cellars’ Pas de Nom wines for $350 per person.

Bradley Vineyards

Elkton is a small town (population: 194) at the north end of the Umpqua Valley. Situated between Eugene and the Oregon Coast, it’s colder and wetter than much of the Umpqua.  And it’s for that reason that, in 2013, the Elkton AVA was recognized.

John Bradley planted his first grapes in 1983 but didn’t produce his own wine until 2003, when a winery refused to take delivery of a truckload of Pinot Noir. Bradley called the winemakers at River’s Edge (for whom he had managed the vineyard) and they collaborated right then to make the first Bradley Pinot Noir.  Last year, John passed away unexpectedly at age 65. Today, the Bradley label is still going strong, producing wines under the leadership of his wife, Bonnie, and their two adult children, Tyler and Rachel.

Viento Wines

Winemaker Rich Cushman is a Hood River native, and after studying viticulture at UC

Davis and apprenticing in Germany, he decided that he was “a Hood River boy” and turned down job offers that would take him out of Oregon.

While in Germany, Cushman fell in love with Riesling and in 1981, he planted his first vines – still growing strong right next door to the Viento tasting room. As he says, “The vines are now getting old and gnarly but are producing wonderful quality fruit.” And that makes Viento Wines an excellent sample of what you’ll find in and around Hood River.
