“Clean Out Your Medicine Cabinet Day” Happens October 10

Ever wonder what you should do with all the unwanted or expired drugs just sitting in your medicine cabinet? On Saturday, October 10, the Newberg-Dundee Police Department is holding a prescription drug drop off event in Newberg.

Co-sponsored by Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation’s Springbrook residential campus in Newberg, this event offers all residents in the area a safe way to dispose of dangerous drugs, as well as get their annual flu shots and have some fun painting pumpkins and eating fall-inspired snacks.

The point of this event is to keep poisonous substances from entering the water supply as well as avoid addiction and overdoses among the community.

"As you clean out your medicine cabinet, you'll likely find unused opioids, such as Vicodin and OxyContin," said Jan Vondrachek, vice president for the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation's Pacific NW Region. "We are especially concerned about opioids because they are highly addictive and can cause death from overdose. Addiction to opioids is an epidemic in Oregon often leading to illegal drug use, most often heroin."

Items that will be accepted on Clean Out day include:

-Expired or unwanted prescription medications

-Over-the-counter medications

-Out-of-date vitamins and supplements

-Veterinary medications

-Medications from deceased family members

-Unknown tablets or capsules

Unacceptable items include sharps or needles, mercury thermometers, and medical waste such as used and/or blood soaked bandages.

Please keep medications in their original containers.

The event will take place Saturday, October 10 from 10am-1pm at the Rite Aid parking lot, 1150 N Springbrook Rd, Newberg, Oregon. It is a free community event.
