On Monday, OHSU announced that Brian J. O’Roak, Ph.D., was selected to be one of the elite recipients of the 2015 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship.

The Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship is a non- profit grant institution that awards young scientists who stand out in their respective fields.

The fellows receive $50,000 to go toward their research.

In addition, previous fellows have gone on to receive Nobel Prizes, Fields Medals, and National Medals of Science.

To say that the fellowship is a great opportunity is obviously an understatement, and O’Roak and his colleagues are ecstatic that he has been selected for his achievements in neurogenetics.

Since 2013, O’Roak has taught as an assistant professor of molecular and medical genetics.

Notably, O’Roak has received recognition for his work studying autism.

His research resulted in “the development of new technologies that allow for the rapid and inexpensive screening of various patient groups…” said the OHSU press release.

O’Roak joins the ranks of well-known researchers and theorists such as John Nash and Henrique von Gersdorff, Ph.D.

"He is one of those rare 'bridge' scientists who can lead a high-impact research program that will cut across institutional, basic science and clinical boundaries,” said Susan Hayflick, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics in OHSU School of Medicine.
