The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is asking parents to supervise their children’s trick-or-treating as part of five tips for Halloween safety.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, children are twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than on any other day of the year. In order to keep kids safe this October 31, the Office will give away free blinking safety light that can be added to a child’s costume to the first 1,500 people to visit the office through 5 PM on Friday
The Sheriff’s Office is asking kids and families to follow these five tips:
-Walk in groups or with a trusted adult, do not allow children to trick-or-treat alone.
-Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.
-Use a flashlight while trick-or-treating.
-Always walk and do not run from house to house.
-Wear your free Sheriff's Office blinking safety light.
Drivers are also being asked to take extra precaution when on the roads during Halloween. The Sheriff’s Office advised that drivers slow down and be alert, especially in the evening and in residential neighborhoods and to watch for children at intersections, medians and curbs.
