video: “Snazzy Portland” Video Sings The Virtues Of Our City

Friday, January 30, 2015

Portlanders, as of late, are not satisfied with just being weird. We seem to be getting a bit of thrill out of mocking ourselves for it. This is fine but it begs the question: Are we being weird because that is who we are, or are we being weird because that’s who we think we should be?

What, even, is weird? It's an age-old Portland question.

Native Portlanders like to vent their frustration with the TV show, Portlandia for throwing gasoline on the fuse of co-optive, self-deprecating humor.

A non-native can only imagine the frustration of watching people come in hordes to your city and then poke fun at themselves for being quirky enough to find it appealing. That being said, Portlandia has created some funny skits, the “Dream of the 90s” video being one of them.

"Snazzy Portland" is another oldie-but-goodie from 2012 from the Bad Mintons that you may have overlooked. Where they get their inspiration is clear, but there is a lightheartedness purveying in this video that tempers all the self-hatred. Must be the antidepressants in the beer.  Snap!
