Here are five programs that will train students to be ready for a career in the oil and gas industry:
Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO
- Students in the College of Earth Resource Sciences and Engineering take two years of math, science, econ, and general engineering before applying into the Petroleum Engineering major, where topics such as fundamental fluid and rock behavior, drilling, well completions and stimulation, well testing, reservoir engineering, supplemental and enhanced oil recovery, economic evaluation of petroleum projects, and environmental and safety issues will be studied.
- Job placement of new graduates of Mines is 100% by graduation, and most remain employed with an undergraduate degree in the field during their entire career.

Marietta College, Marietta, OH
- Students in the Petroleum Engineering major have access to a drilling and completion fluids lab, a core fluids and analysis lab, and a natural gas lab for the research you'll be performing on campus. But you'll also regularly carry out field studies at oil and gas wells located throughout the region.
- Seniors in the major participate in a senior industry-style design project that moves through well drilling, reservoir, production, and facilities tasks, and concludes with the design of a waterflood installation.

Montana Tech, Butte, MT
- The School of Mines and Engineering offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Petroleum Engineering, within which a student may specialize in Reservoir Engineering, Drilling Engineering, or Production Engineering.
- Students at Montana Tech gain hands-on practice through five high-tech labs on campus, in funded undergraduate research, and in field experiences across the state.

University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND
- Students in the College of Engineering and Mines may complete the degree requirements on the main campus or as an online degree program. University of North Dakota participates in the Western Undergraduate Exchange, offering a tuition discount for students in 15 western states.
- The UND Department of Petroleum Engineering offers a Bachelor of Science degree with academic training, internships, research, and field study obtained in the country’s second-largest oil-producing state.
- By the numbers: 78% overall acceptance rate. SAT Mid-ranges: CR 480-600, M 490-620; ACT Mid-range: 21-27.
University of Wyoming, Laramie, WY
- The College of Engineering and Applied Science offers a Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering with 500 undergraduates and 75 graduate students in the department.
- The Undergraduate Engineering Scholars Program will provide scholarships to 48 students to help offset the cost of attendance. University of Wyoming participates in the Western Undergraduate Exchange, offering a tuition discount for students in 15 western states.
- By the numbers: 96% overall acceptance rate. SAT Mid-ranges: CR 480-620, M 510-620; ACT Mid-range: 22-27.
