College Counseling: Great Schools for Undergraduate Programs in Geographic Information Science

Saturday, May 23, 2015

Geographic Information Systems are computer systems that enable professionals to use large amounts of data to map and discern trends in natural resources and populations.  Analysts collect, encode, and maintain digital data, they produce maps, design graphics, and tabulate statistical summaries. From real-time wildfire risk assessment, to crime analysis, to disease outbreaks, the spatial sciences are fast becoming an integral part of modern resource management. GIS technologies help environmental and natural resource managers map geographical features, patterns, changes, and conditions for environmental decision-making, planning, and problem solving. The geospatial technology sector has been growing at double digit rates for several decades, and there are several levels of education in the field, certificate programs for professionals, 2-year degrees for GIS technology training, Bachelor of Science degrees, Master’s level and Doctoral level degrees.

Here are five undergraduate programs in geographic information science:

Central Washington University, Ellensburg, WA

  • The Geographic Information Science concentration within the Geography major requires core classes in both geography and GIS, including air photo interpretation, remote sensing, and quantitative methods.
  • The Center for Spatial Information and Research at CWU gives GIS students (also students in chemistry, environmental science, natural resource management, and others) the opportunity to work on environmental and economic problems related to shorelines and associate wetlands, which confront many rural-based agencies and communities in the Pacific Northwest.
  • By the numbers: 10,400 undergraduates; 82% overall acceptance rate; SAT mid-ranges: CR 430-550, M 450-550; ACT mid-range 18-23.

Humboldt State University, Arcata, CA

  • The Environmental Science and Management Department at HSU offers a minor in Geospatial Analysis that includes courses in Remote Sensing, Cartography, and Mobile Mapping.
  • The Spatial Analysis Lab is where GIS students gain hands-on experience in applying GIS and remote sensing technologies as tools for managing, evaluating, analyzing and visualizing spatial data.
  • By the numbers: 7700 undergraduates; 76% overall acceptance rate. SAT Mid-ranges: CR 440-560, M 430-550; ACT Mid-range: 18-24.

Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI

  • The Bachelor of Science in Geographic Information Science study three main areas in the degree program: Geographic Information Systems, Cartography, and Remote Sensing.
  • Students gain field experience analyzing glacial landscapes and river systems in Michigan, prehistoric environmental change in the Great Lakes region, and also acquire internships in agencies that may ultimately hire GIS grads: the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the US Geological Survey, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and NASA.
  • By the numbers: 38,000 undergraduates, 69% overall acceptance rate; SAT mid-ranges: CR 420- 580, M 550-690; ACT mid-range 23-28.

Oregon Insitute of Technology, Klamath Falls, OR

  • OIT offers both the Bachelor of Science in Geomatics (GIS Option) and a minor in Geomatics; the program is accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET).
  • Geomatics graduates from OIT boast a 95% employment rate upon graduation.
  • By the numbers: 3800 undergraduates, 93% overall acceptance rate; acceptance rate for architecture program will vary. SAT Mid-ranges: CR 440-560, M 470-590; ACT Mid-range: 21-27.

Texas A & M University, College Station, TX

  • The Bachelor of Science in Spatial Sciences at A&M comprises a core curriculum of ecology, natural resource economics, agricultural economics, chemistry, remote sensing, global positioning systems.
  • The Spatial Sciences Laboratory exists to develop and support research and teaching in advanced spatial analysis, spatial data handling, geographic information systems, global positioning systems, and remote sensing.
  • By the numbers: 44,000 undergraduates, 69% overall acceptance rate; acceptance rate to competitive programs vary. SAT Mid-ranges: CR 520-630, M 550-660; ACT Mid-range 23-29.

Other colleges and universities with undergraduate programs in Geographic Information Systems include Appalachian State University (NC), Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, DePaul University (IL), Harrisburg University  of Science and Technology (PA), Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Penn State University (PA), Salem State University (MA), University of Akron (OH), University of Texas/Dallas.
