Carla, 25: Sizzle Pie
They have traditional pizzas with untraditional names (like “Napalm Breath” and “Good Luck In Jail”), a great jukebox and skater-friendly hours (they’re open until 4 a.m.). But if you don’t dig gluten, they offer gluten-free crusts too. And if you’re vegan, they have not one but ten options, like their pizza with vegan pepperoni, seitan Italian sausage, green peppers, white onion and shredded Daiya mozzarella “cheese.”
Mitch, 26: Killer Burger
Before we moved into our new location, we were a quick push away from Killer Burger. And, yes, it made moving bittersweet. Every single 1/3 pound burger comes with bacon unless you tell them otherwise. And why would you want to do that? They also make their own peanut butter sauce and roast their own chilies. And their famous (or is that infamous?) Peanut Butter-Pickle-Bacon Burger is only $5.95 in the afternoons, which means you have money left over for one of their Microbrews.
Marisa, 27: C-Bar
You’ve got to love a bar that serves kick-ass comfort food, has its own pinball room, and stays open until 2:30 in the morning, even on Sundays. There are also twenty rotating taps and their version of poutine – house cut fries, collards, bacon lardons, cheese and beef gravy – that can be made “vegan upon request.” Bacon, cheese and beef poutine that can be made vegan upon request. You don’t see that everyday. Well, not unless you live in Portland.
Corey, 30: Old Salt Marketplace
They bake their own biscuits, brew their own ginger beer, and butcher their own meat at our favorite restaurant-deli-farmers’ market-butcher-cooking school-bar. If you can’t decide between the hearth-roasted beef or the smoked ham hock, you’re not alone. And, as an added bonus, if you’ve arrived by board, you can still grab a house-made Slim Jim for the road. (5027 NE 42nd Ave, Portland)
Tony, 28: Du’s Grill
Du’s is fast, cheap and good. The menu is small but the portions are big and the food’s tasty. Yes, there is usually a line but, thankfully, the chefs work quickly. The chicken teriyaki is juicy and full of flavor and the poppy seed dressing is addictive. But, whatever you do, make sure you cruise over there – whether by bike, car, board or foot – before 9pm, because they close at 8:45pm on the dot. (5365 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland)
Jade, 24: Vita Café
Another great option if you’re vegan or vegetarian (or like to pretend that you are when you eat out). A couple of our Vita favorites? The Supergrain Salad with black and white quinoa and their herb and onion bread topped with almond gravy. And, kids eat pretty close to free – for just one dollar – between five and seven p.m. every evening. Of course, kids always eat free – if you think about it. When was the last time you saw one pay? (3023 NE Alberta St, Portland)
Jesse, 26: White Owl Social Club
“Gluten-Free, omnivore, vegetarian, vegan? On a strict liquid diet? We've got you covered,” reads the White Owl website. And they do. They have beet and nut burgers, vegan mac and cheese, and kombucha cocktails and s’mores. They also have (loud) live music, motorcycle parking, a huge dog (and skate) friendly patio, and are open until 2:30 in the morning. (1305 SE 8th Ave; Portland)
