Feast Portland
Bon Appétit presents Feast Portland: A Celebration of Oregon Bounty is all about food. Really good food. This annual event takes the city by storm for one weekend each September. It’s a glorious celebration of everything in our state that is gorge-worthy. It’s also a great space to see your favorite chefs, sample wares from unique vendors and find out that pork and beans can be transformed into a dish so spectacular it will leave you hankering for more.
And make sure to find out where all the after parties are happening. That’s where Feast gets really feisty.
Now through Sunday. Various locations and pricing. http://www.feastportland.com
Rose City Comic Con
Dress up as your favorite comic book or superhero character and head to the Oregon Convention Center for RCCC 2014. Co-produced by Emerald City Comicon and Rose City Comic Con, this star-packed will include appearances by Grimm's Sasha Roiz, Star Trek Voyager's Garrett Wang, Ghostbuster's Ernie Hudson, Sean "Goonies Never Say Die" Astin and something that is billed as "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Reunion." Hmmmmm.
Oregon Convention Center, 777 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 20-21. Buy tickets here.
La Cage Aux Folles
Local drag artiste Poison Waters (aka Kevin Cook) is trading in his high-heeled pumps for more sensible shoes to reprise his role as Jacob in “La Cage aux Folles.” The musical comedy by Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein is a timeless tale of the truism that what really makes a family is love. And sequins. And lots of music. Classic songs include “The Best of Times,” and “I Am What I Am.”
Newmark Theatre, 1111 SW Broadway. Sept. 20- Oct. 5. Buy tickets here.
Dreamgirls
Based loosely on the aspirations and success of groups such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, Jackie Wilson and others, the story focuses around a female singing trio, “The Dreams” of Chicago, and their whirlwind of a ride to fame and fortune. Dreamgirls features music by Henry Krieger and book and lyrics by Tom Eyen. The original Broadway production was directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett, with orchestrations by Harold Wheeler.
This musical is recommended for ages 13+ for it contains mature content and language.
Main Stage at the Gerding Theater at the Armory, 128 NW Eleventh Ave. Previews now through Sept. 25. Opening Night, Sept. 26. http://www.pcs.org/dreamgirls/
