slides: Multnomah County Animal Services Shatters Record for Saving Animals Lives

Saturday, February 28, 2015

Hi! My name is Wonderer.

Hi! My name is Wonderer.

Multnomah County Animal Services (MCAS) has accomplished its highest save rate to date, with 94.1 percent of dogs and 87.1 percent of cats leaving the shelter alive.

Since adopting the Asilomar Accords method of animal data reporting in 2006, MCAS has seen steady gains in its live release or save rate with 2014 being the best year yet. The combined 2014 rate for cats and dogs was 90.2 percent.

See Slides Below: 10 Great Pets in Need of Loving Homes- February 28

MCAS welcomes all lost, stray abandoned and abused animals, no matter their age, breed, health or behavior.

MCAS attributes the improvements to a variety of components. For instance MCAS commends the Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland (ASAP) Spay & Save program. The program provides inexpensive pay/neuter surgeries for pets of low income people.

MCAS has also created several programs including the ACT program and kitten triage trailer program. Animals who need special attention are begin card for by foster parents who care for them so they can be adopted and healthy.

If you are not looking to adopt, you can still help by donating to the Dolly's Fund and pay for life-saving medical treatments for abandoned animals, donating items from shelter’s wish list, or becoming a foster parent for animals that need a short-term home.

Riley

Breed: Terrier / Poodle

Hello, I'm Riley. I'm pretty sure you would never guess from seeing me that I am 12 years old. I'm an athletic terrier mix. Being a whirling dervish keeps me a svelte 19lbs. I need a home to chill out but I still want regular exercise. You should see me jump! Under all the excess fur, I'm a handsome gent and will require regular grooming to stay that way. The shelter recommends kids 12 & up to help Riley because younger kids might be too much for him or visa versa.

Big Ben

Breed: Newfoundland/ Mix
Gender: Male
Age: Adult

Hi my shelter name is Big Ben and as you can see I am a social gentle giant. At around 10 years old and weighing in at 100 lbs I have special needs. Right off the bat I need to request a one story home with only a few or no stairs for me to deal with. I will need pain management, joint supplements and gentle low impact movement/excursive to keep me comfortable in my retirement.
A very nice family took care of me for a couple of months so they will tell you I was gentle with children and cats. I also lived with a small dog, that was a bit trying for me. Do I fit into your home? Please ask about me today.

Dunbar

Breed: Domestic Shorthair/ Mix
Gender: Male

Hi there! I'm Dunbar, a 1.5 year old neutered male currently in foster care. My foster mum says I'm a big lover boy who is very well behaved because I always use my litterbox and finish my meals. Some of my favorite things are chin scratches, getting brushed, and swatting at dangly feathers. During the day I like to sit on the window like a loaf and watch the birdies. I am quiet and little shy but I will come around with patience and love. I'm here waiting for someone to adopt me into their home so we can be best friends forever. If that sounds like a good deal to you, contact my foster mum at [email protected] to set up a time to meet me

Sebastian

Hello, my name is Sebastian. I am a goofy and sensitive young man that is looking for a fresh start. My new family should have no children under 10, be patient, gentle, active, and interested in using positive training methods to show me what it means to be someone's inside family companion. If you are a first time dog owner then my shelter friends recommend that you take a look at the other dogs here.
