The compelling sports documentary, "Game Face" just might change the face of sports and is a definite game changer in the world of documentary film. It was the opening night film for the QDoc Film Festival in Northeast Portland on May 14.

Director Michiel Thomas, subjects Fallon Fox and Terrence Clemens, and sports superstar (and the first openly gay player in the NBA) Jason Collins, joined QDoc co-directors David Weissman and Russ Gage at the Hollywood Theater for the opening night of the QDoc Film Festival.

Game Face, which opened the fest, is Thomas’s first feature film. Beautifully shot and sensitively and intelligently constructed, the film follows college basketball player Terrence Clemens and Fallon Fox, a trans, lesbian and well-known Mixed Martial Arts competitor. These two extraordinarily courageous athletes are followed by filmmaker Michiel Thomas as they navigate the delicate process of coming out within their respective sports. Both Fallon and Terrence generously share their inner selves, their strengths and their vulnerabilities. Jason Collins is also in the film. He befriends and mentors Clemens.

Following the screening the opening night party was held nearby at Velo Cult Bike Shop. Handcrafted beers and nibbles from Pambiche were provided to the guests who included the cast of the film, Roey Thorpe, Jewel Robinson, Carl Halvorson and others.

The QDoc is one of only two festivals in the world dedicated to LBGTQ documentaries. The QDoc Fest continues through May 17.
