Portland Then/Now: Tom McCall Waterfront Park

THEN: This image provides of view from Waterfront Park, looking towards the Burnside Bridge, in 1983. According to a story done by Anne Saker in 2009 for The Oregonian, this  dock at the very end of Southwest Ankeny Street was named in 1979 for union leader Francis J. Murane.

Although a working dock, the Murane Wharf was open to the public as seen in this photo from 1983. According to Saker’s story Murane was instrumental in saving such iconic Portland treasures as the Skidmore Fountain and the Benson Bubblers.

He also helped create a trust for the restoration of the Pittock Mansion.

NOW: The walkway on the west bank of the Wiilamette River which connects the Saturday Market area to Tom McCall Waterfront Park covers the formerly much-used wharf.

Murname’s wharf is no longer is accessible to the public.

But Portland’s Saturday Market and waterfront park is still accessible and attracts locals and tourists alike on a daily basis.
