The Top Down Movie Festival atop the Hotel DeLuxe.
Though summer usually emphasizes the value of the AC, sitting indoors still never seems to suffice. Ever the geographic showoff, being outside is a way of life in Oregon. However, summertime in Oregon also provides an extensive and accessible landscape for moviegoers.
Take, for example, the 99W drive-in theater in Newburg, Oregon, just a very small stone’s throw away from downtown Portland (a forty-minute drive). The 99W drive-in theater is one of the last of its kind nationally: here you can park your car, watch a vintage movie on the big screen, and grab a coke and a treat from the snack bar (sans alcohol because then you would be drinking behind the wheel). Unlike at an indoor movie theater, you and your date can always just roll up the windows if the cuddling grows too heavy.
Though the unique 99W drive-in theater is about as genuinely 50s as pomade and old spice, it is just one of many outdoor movie venues taking shape this summer. Below is a list of viable options for Oregon residents who -- true to the spirit -- cannot resist the outdoors.

99W Drive-In
Looking for a classic drive-in experience that’s literally included on the National Register of Historic Places? 99W Drive-In is your best bet. Night Movies at Cartopia
Want a late-night movie presented in a food cart pod? One of Portland’s most famous food cart blocks known as “Cartopia,” located on 12th and Hawthorne, offers Night Movies at Cartopia each Sunday night beginning at 9:50. Here, you can gear up with some PB&J fries from Potato Champion, which doubles as an authentic Portland snack bar. There are benches typically located within the pod for seating, but it is probably best to bring your own lawn chair just in case. The food carts themselves will be open long after the movie is finished, so feel free to get comfortable.

Top Down
Like most things, movies are better with a view. This summer, from July 16th to August 27th, the Northwest Film Center offers its annual outdoor film series Top Down on top of the Hotel deLuxe. What sets this event apart besides the seating arrangement? Expect there to be an array of local bands, inventive cocktails and craft beers, and BBQ from nearby Gracie’s Restaurant in attendance to the event. Music starts at 8 pm so a half hour earlier is the suggested arrival time. Top Down isn’t your average film festival because it’s not just a film festival. Bring a chair with a blanket as the wind can pick up on the rooftop!
Check out Top Down.

Movies In The Garden
For a more romantic, rural version of Movies In the Park, check out Movies in the Garden, with showings each Thursday night from July 9th to August 27th. Showings begin at 7 PM and this is done purposefully: from the garden there is an elaborate view of the sunset. Keep in mind that some of the movies are R-rated and valid ID must be shown to gain entrance. Also, this event is not free! But for frequent visitors, there is an incredibly cheap $15 seasonal pass that is worth further investigating.
