The Scarlet Letters: The Sex Dream Reveal

Tuesday, September 15, 2015

Our letters this week comes from a reader who wants to know if it’s okay to tell us about his sex dream. Send questions, comments and rants to [email protected].

Should I Reveal My Sex Dream To The Person Who Starred In It?

Hey, sexy advice columnists!

Is it bad manners to share your sex dream with the person you had it with?

I always wondered, and figured you two would be the ones to ask.

Please answer soon because I want to know if it would be ok to tell you about this smokin' hot dream I had.

Love,

Sweaty

Dear Sweaty,

Before you go off about your nocturnal escapades you should open a window and maybe have some ice water while you read our answer.

One of us has had a sex dream about almost everyone she’s ever met, up to and including your mom. One of us has not, and thinks the thing about your mom is kind of nasty. And it probably is. Nevertheless, we are both normal.

Research shows that most people dream about sex a lot. According to a University of Montreal study, about 8% of a person’s dream activity is in some way sexual. That statistic applies to both men and women.

Eight percent of your waking life is about an hour and a half. Not to cast aspersions on your virility, but we doubt you do it for 115 minutes every day, so that means we dream about sex far more than we actually have it. Additionally, have you ever had a dream about sex with a desk, a CB radio or that Paul Bunyon statue in SE Portland? Well, we have, so we know that dreaming about sex with something or someone doesn’t necessarily mean you’re attracted to them. Or it. Or whatever.

Besides being abundant, dream sex is dreamy -- and nobody ever has to know who you roll with, unless you decide to share. But should you? That depends.

A Scarlet once had her crush tell her in a crowded room that he’d dreamed about her. The look in his eyes told her what kind of dream. She couldn’t get her lacies off fast enough.

Another time a Scarlet was ambushed by a guy’s dream, and her initial lack of interest in him turned immediately to a sort of rancid disgust. She cut him off before he got too far, but it was never not weird around him after that.

You see what we mean? Telling can be good or bad. So how do you know what to do? Use our handy guide!

HANDY SEX DREAM DISCLOSURE GUIDE

1.    Are you sexually interested in the dream person when you are awake? If yes, go to #2. If not, STOP. No reason to tell.

2.    Do you have any chemistry with the person? Is there flirtation, spark, vibe? Do you think it’s possible this person has had a sex dream about you, and liked it? If yes, go to #3. If no, STOP. Other people’s dreams are usually boring, and other people telling you their sex dreams starring you when you had absolutely no idea they thought about you That Way is creepy.

3.    Is this person an appropriate choice for a sex partner? If yes, go to #4. If the person is your grandmother, or your brother’s spouse, or your spouse’s grandmother, or your best friend’s recent ex, or Gary Busey, or any of many very bad and very obvious bad choices, STOP RIGHT THERE. You’re not going to start chaos in your social group and then blame us.

4.    Would it be appropriate to share your dream with this person? We are trusting you here. Be honest. If you’re not sure it’s ok, it probably isn’t. STOP. Do the right thing or forever be sorry.

If you answered YES to all four questions, we’re ok with you telling. When you do, though, keep in mind that what you conceal is just as intriguing as what you reveal. Think erotica as opposed to porn.

If the person already wanted to get busy with you, they will be tantalized to hear you dreamed of them. Don’t ruin it by getting all play-by-play and clinical. If they want to hear more, they’ll let you know.

So, Sweaty, have a cool shower then go through the questions. After that, we’re sure you’ll know how to proceed. Or not.

Love,

The Scarlets
