The Zombie Apocalypse Comes to Portland
Thursday, February 05, 2015
Sponsored by The Go Game, this game will be free and open to players from ages 2-92, that is if a two-year-old can outrun the 'walking dead.'
The game was originally designed in 2011 by Jenny Gottstein, according to The Go Game website whose motto is “Increasing community resilience through play.” And...brains!!!
Jenny, the Director of Games, wanted to come up with a way that would prepare communities for potential disasters while also letting them have a good time.
Jenny’s mission to create community resilience led to her and her colleagues designing the Zombie Apocalypse game where players go from bashing zombie heads (they are fake) to learning how to pack real life survival kits that can be used in the event of fires, earthquakes, or other potential disasters (that is real).
The game was originally based in San Francisco, but this year, Portlanders get to experience the fun.
Players will discover how to bandage wounds, perform CPR, memorize evacuation routes, and interpret radio emergency announcements.
Some of the educators who plan to help out at the event include Outward Bound, ADX, Red Cross, and Portland Made.
As a reward for the player’s efforts, The Zombie Apocalypse Preparedness Game players have the chance to win prizes from sponsors such as OMSI, Stump town Coffee, Portland Design Museum, and many other local organizations.
Come learn and play the Zombie Apocalypse Disaster Preparedness Game Saturday, Feb. 21st. from 1-4pm. RSVP here.
