Venerable Hunan Restaurant to Close at End of Year

Hunan

Hunan Restaurant is located in downtown Portland's Morgan's Alley

After 35 years of serving downtown diners, the venerable Hunan Restaurant will close its doors on December 28.

A sign was recently posted just outside of one of downtown Portland's oldest eating establishments—Hunan Restaurant—announcing its closure. It was posted by Hunan's owner, David Liu: "due to personal health issues I have decided to retire."

The family-owned business has been a longtime resident of Morgan's Alley outlasting such other old-time favorites as Rian's Restaurants and The Jolly Joan once billed as Portland's "largest, most modern restaurant and sandwich shop."

For nearly forty year Hunan's has been the place to find low to mid-priced traditional American-style Chinese dishes. With nearly 100 items on its dinner menu it tends to lean heavy on standbys like General Tso's Chicken and Sesame Chicken.  And much like the nearby Red Coach was a lunch favorite for office workers in the area.

Liu indicates the restaurant will stay open until Sunday, December 28 at which time they will "close their doors permanently."

Word is that the owners of the building are currently looking for a new restaurant tenant to take over the space that hovers over the shopping alley below.
