Beaverton Offers Tax Help to Low and Middle Income Families

Friday, January 22, 2016

A scene from last year's tax help program

The City of Beaverton is doing their part to make sure residents are ready for tax season with their free tax help, offered in conjunction with AARP Tax-aide and CASH Oregon.

More than 60 IRS-certified volunteers will be on hand to assist low-and-middle-income residents with their taxes. Agents will help residents determine the tax credits they are eligible, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Last year, program volunteers filed more than 2,000 tax returns, resulting in more than $2.4 million in tax refunds for community members.

Eligible families may be entitled to more than $6,000 in tax refunds with the Earned Income Tax credit. Even still, the IRS reports that one in five workers fail to claim the credits they are owed.

In 2015 alone, more 425 local taxpayers were able to receive the EITC through Beaverton's tax assistance program, which meant additional money back that they can use for groceries, rent, and other bills.

The annual tax help program will take place from February 1 to April 16 at the Beaverton Activities Center, located at 12500 SW Allen Boulevard in Beaverton.
