Brian Wannamaker, the owner of a property adjacent to the school, said he heard shots fired and called 911 immediately.
"Basically, what look like happened was there was a bunch of kids outside; there was four shots, 'boom boom boom boom,' then the kids ran in every different direction," Wannamaker said.
Jamey Winchester works at a business just 20 feet from the front door of Rosemary High School.
Winchester had just finished lunch and walked out the back door of work to catch a smoke. While looking at his phone, he heard five shots followed by screaming.
"The shots were from a .44 or something large caliber," said Winchester. "It wasn't pop-pop, it was boom-boom.
"I'm pretty shaken up. Who can possibly imagine they'd be 20 feet from a school shooting?"
The victims were taken to a hospital and police reported that they were awake at the time.
The area was considered secure within an hour.
