Fire and Rescue, Red Cross Respond to Multiple Portland Fires
Monday, January 25, 2016
Portland Fire and Rescue firefighters responded to a pair of fires on the night of Saturday, January 23.
The first report came in at roughly 7:12 PM, when firefighters were dispatched to a fire on the second level of an underground parking garage at the Oregon Health and Science University.
The garage’s automatic sprinkler system activated, helping to limit the spread of the fire. Fire crews then had to ventilate the large amount of smoke out of the structure. No one was injured in the fire and only one vehicle was damaged in the blaze.
When fires are dispatched to high rise facilities Portland Fire & Rescue's protocol calls for additional units to facilitate ventilation, extrication, and possible rescue. These units are then returned to service if not needed as the incident progresses.
Portland fire and rescue were then dispatched to a residential fire in the vicinity of 3110 NE Fremont Drive at 10:12 PM. A shed in the home’s yard was fully engulfed in flames, but the fire did not spread into the home itself.
Fire crews initially “went defensive,” fighting the fire from the outside, before putting the remaining fire out from inside the shed. No one was injured in the fire.
The Red Cross responded to a residential fire that affected two adults and there family in the 3000 block of Brittany Drive in Forrest Grove. The Red Cross provided temporary lodging, assistance to address immediate basic needs, recovery information, disaster health services and disaster mental health services.
