Governor John Kitzhaber is to launch a literacy campaign called 'stORytime' at Bridger School in Portland on Monday, September 29.  The campaign intends to promote playing, talking, singing and reading with children to help them learn new words. The goal is to have all students on to track to read by third grade.

Umpqua Bank is a signature partner in stORytime, and the Oregon Education Investment Board (OEIB) is organizing the campaign.

The launch is the first of several literacy campaign events happening statewide, according to OEIB. OEIB will host events throughout October and November for counties including Malheur, Yamhill, Coos and Douglas, Klamath and Multnomah.

At the Monday launch, the Governor will be joined by Ray Davis the CEO of Umpqua Bank, Chief Education Officer Nancy Golden, and Portland Public Schools Superintendent Carole Smith.

The launch will be held at Bridger School, 7910 S.E. Market St. Portland, Monday  September 29, at 1:30 pm.

The stORytime launch follows another book-related event this weekend, with Multnomah County Library celebrating its 150th anniversary. A free public celebration for the anniversary is happening at Central Librar today, September 27 from 11 AM to 5 PM.
