Hales, City Council Pass Resolution Suspending Travel to North Carolina

Wednesday, March 30, 2016

Mayor Charlie Hales

Portland Mayor Charlie Hales and the Portland City Council unanimously passed a resolution condemning North Carolina's discriminatory and anti-LGBTQ "Public Facilities Privacy & Securities Act." The resolution temporarily suspends any further city funded public employee travel to the State of North Carolina.

The resolution also calls on civic and business leaders throughout Portland to join the in saying "no to discrimination."

“Gov. Pat McCrory and the North Carolina General Assembly has to understand that such blatant discrimination against their lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people cannot stand. Our nation is made stronger when all Americans are treated equitably,” This resolution shows that Portland stands in solidarity with the great city of Charlotte, led by a champion of equality Mayor Jennifer Roberts, in support of their non-discrimination ordinance," said Mayor Hales.

The City of Portland is joining other city leaders such as Mayor Ed Lee of San Francisco and Mayor Ed Murray of Seattle in denouncing North Carolina's law which allows discrimination against gay and transgender people preempting any non- discrimination ordinances passed by local governments in the state.

Hales and the Portland City Council were joined by Basic Rights Oregon in taking a stand against North Carolina's policy.
