Hash Oil Explosion Caused Tigard Gas Station Fire

Sunday, November 23, 2014

The 76 station bathroom in Tigard where the Nov. 23 fire took place.

A fire in a gas station bathroom may have been started accidentally by two men attempting to make butane hash oil, according to Tigard police.

Police responded to calls of an explosion and a fire shortly after 1:50 a.m. on Nov. 23, at a 76 gas station in Tigard, located at 10775 SW Greenburg Road. Investigators determined that the blaze started when two men tried to use lighter fluid to extract the active chemical compounds from marijuana — a dangerous process that police said has led to similar fires in the past.

Two Tigard men, Dennis Tapia, 18, and Jose Rios, 23, received treatment for burn-related injuries at Providence St. Vincent Legacy as they were questioned by police.

Although no charges have been filed against the men, investigators plan to forward their concluded investigation to the Washington County District Attorney's Office, police said.
