Man Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting After Attacking Police with Knife

On Sunday evening at 5:26 pm, two Portland police officers responded to a 9-1-1 call regarding a burglary at Southesast 130th Ave. and Sherman St. Officers arrived at 5:31 pm and found the caller attempting to restrain the subject. 

As the officers approached the subject, he advanced toward them with a double-bladed, 10-inch knife in a weaving figure eight motion, according to police. The man got very close to one of the officers who then fired two rounds, striking the suspect. 

The man remained on his feet after being shot, and the other officer re-holstered his weapon and deployed a taser. The man then dropped to the ground and an ambulance immediately responded and transported him to a local hospital where he later died, according to police. 

Detectives have learned that the incident began as a dispute between the neighbors over the weekend. 

The man is a 36-year-old white male from out of state. Police will not release further identification until the Oregon State Medical Examiner completes an autopsy today and notifies the subject's next of kin, according to Sgt. Greg Stewart. Detectives are still determining information regarding his criminal history and what his involvement was with the residents of both houses involved. 

The identity of the two officers involved will be released later this afternoon, police said. They will remain on paid administrative leave, per Bureau policy, until the completion of the Grand Jury. 

Following the Grand Jury, the Bureau will conduct an internal review of the entire incident and the case will go before the Police Review Board (PPB), which is comprised of community members, PPB members and representatives from the Independent Police Review Division.
