MESD Fires Brett Bigham, 2014 Teacher of the Year
Friday, April 03, 2015
Annie Ellison, GoLocalPDX Reporter
The 2014 Oregon Teacher of the Year, who has been at odds with the Multnomah Education Service District over labor complaints and allegations of discrimination, has been fired.
MESD Interim Superintendent Jim Rose called the decision a difficult one.
“Unfortunately, it became clear over time that Brett’s focus was no longer his classroom and students, as evidenced by excessive time away and distraction during class time,” Rosd said. “Brett was no longer giving his students his best efforts.”
Bigham said he, his lawyer Matthew Ellis, and the Oregon Education Association, the union representing MESD teachers, plan to contest the termination.
Bigham said the report that determined he had missed too many teaching days was inaccurate, and that the necessary steps required for his termination were not taken. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Labor and Industries, one of two agencies Bigham filed complaints for discrimination and retaliation, is expected to rule on Bigham's complaints shortly.
"Our agency is tracking the issue very closely and expects to soon complete our investigation into whether there’s substantial evidence of unlawful retaliation and discrimination," BOLI spokesman Charlie Burr said.
Stephen Marc Beaudoin, a candidate running for MESD school board position 6, said Bigham’s dismissal is a case in point of the ongoing “time of crisis and strife” at MESD.
“From the firing of Superintendent Barbara Jorgensen to the firestorm of negative media attention, MESD has been in the news for all the wrong reasons,” Beaudoin said. “I hope that we can return our attention to the core of MESD’s mission and work: the students served by MESD, and to the services and supports needed so those students can learn, grow, and thrive.”
