Mt. Angel Fire Department Saves Grandmother, Grandson

Mt. Angel Fire Department rescuers saved a pair of passengers that were stranded in a tree after escaping from their submerged car.

Michelle Schroll, 46 of Salem, and her 11-year-old grandson were traveling on Monitor-McKee Road NE when they struck a bridge abutment. Schroll lost control of her car and careened into Zollner Creek.

The car was quickly fully submerged in the creek. School and her grandson were able to escape the submerged car and clung to a tree in the middle of the creek while they waited for help to arrive.

Firefighters from the Mt. Angel Fire Department arrived on scene and were able to get life preservers to both Schroll and her grandson. Rescuers then used a ladder to hoist rescuers out over the water to save Ms. Schroll and her grandson.

The pair were taken to Salem Hospital and are expected to survive. Marion County Public Works is examining the bridge. The road is expected to remain open and it is unknown at this time how or when the car will be recovered.
