National Spokesperson for Sex Education Coming to Portland

Thursday, January 15, 2015

Vice president of sex education at Planned Parenthood Leslie Kantor, MPH will be the keynote speaker at Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette’s 2015 Annual Luncheon.

Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette is the largest nonprofit family planning and reproductive rights organization in Oregon and Southwest Washington. At the Annual Luncheon they will be celebrating the 42nd anniversary of the historic court decision Roe v. Wade.

Kantor has been working in the field of sex education for over 20 years, and has served as Planned Parenthood’s vice president of education since 1996. As part of her job, she has focused on developing technology-based approaches in order to better reach more people.

Oregon is one of only 13 states that mandate a medically accurate sex education curriculum to be taught in schools. As reported in a GoLocalPDX article earlier this month using data released by the CDC, Oregon experienced a drop in teen pregnancies by 19 percent between 2000 and 2012. Oregon’s teen birth rate in 2012 stood at 23.8 births per 1000 female teens between ages 15-19 compared to the national rate of 29.4.

The 2015 Annual Luncheon will take place on Friday January 23 at the Portland Hilton. About 840 supporters are expected to attend.
