NEW: Portland High School Shooting: Rosemary Anderson, School For Troubled Students

Friday, December 12, 2014

Officers from the Portland Police Bureau secure the crime scene outside of RAHS in North Portland Dec. 12.

Rosemary Anderson High School, an accredited alternative school for troubled students and dropouts, was founded Portland Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) in 1983. With less than 200 students enrolled per year, many of whom are over the age of 18, the institution is a self-described last chance at an education for many Portland youth.

The school’s website states that it has had a 90% graduation rate for high school students who enroll in the program — singificantly higher than the national average of 19% of high school dropouts who go on to graduate or get their GED.

The school boasts smaller class sizes than other high schools, support for students with learning disabilities, mentoring programs, outreach for homeless students and pre-employment training.

Approximately 85 percent of the school’s students are people of color, according to Portland Public Schools.
