A single-vehicle crash that occurred early on Sunday morning killed a 54-year-old man, according to police.

Rodney A Stambaugh, 54, of Sisters, was driving his 1997 Subaru wagon on Highway 20 near milepost 2.5, just east of Sisters, when police say he struck a tree.

Oregon State Police troopers and emergency personnel responded to the report of a crash at roughly 3:30 on Sunday morning. Stambaugh was pronounced dead by energy crews at the scene.

Police said that an initial investigation indicated that Stambaugh was traveling eastbound on Highway 20 when he left the roadway and struck a tree. The road was covered in black ice at the time of the crash but officers are not sure why Stambaugh’s Subaru left the road.

Oregon State Police were assisted by Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, Bend Police, Black Butte Police, the Oregon Department of Transportation and Cloverdale Fire and Rescue.  An investigation is ongoing.
