Oregon’s Minimum Wage to Rise by 15 Cents
Thursday, September 18, 2014
The minimum wage will go up from $9.10 an hour to $9.25. The new wage takes effect Jan. 1 and will impact 141,822 workers, according to a release from BOLI.
“Oregon’s minimum wage helps workers keep pace with the rising cost of goods while boosting the purchasing power of consumers around the state,” Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian said in a press release. “With this increase in Oregon’s wage floor, more than 140,000 Oregonians will have more money to make ends meet – and more money to spend at local businesses.
"That’s good for everyone.”
Oregon voters in 2002 granted Avakian the authority to set the minimum wage annually based on inflation. Oregon has the second highest minimum wage in the country. Washington state has the highest at $9.32 an hour.
Advocates for a $15-an-hour minimum wage have been protesting in cities across the country, trying to get local governments to raise the required pay level.
Next year’s wage increase will impact about 8 percent of Oregon’s workforce, the release stated.
The minimum wage increase will amount to an extra $234 in the pockets of workers who clock 30 hours a week in 2015, the press release states.
