A man was seriously injured Tuesday morning in northeast Portland after being struck by a school bus and pinned underneath it, fire officials said.

The man, who was not named, was transported to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with serious injuries, according to a press release from Portland Fire and Rescue.

The incident happened around 7 a.m. at the intersection of NE 162nd Ave. and NE Sandy Blvd.

The man’s clothing and backpack were entangled in the bus's undercarriage but his body wasn't physically pinned, according to police. Firefighters were able to quickly free the man and he was entered into the trauma system at Legacy Emanuel.

“Portland Fire & Rescue reminds pedestrians and drivers to be especially vigilant as the days get shorter and winter weather sets in,” an official said in a press release. “Drivers should avoid distracted driving (cell phones etc.) and pedestrians should wear bright or reflective clothing and lights at night.”

No information on the cause of the accident was provided.
