Portland Airports Certified with Global Carbon Accounting Program

Friday, February 27, 2015

Portland International Airport, Hillsboro Airport and Troutdale Airport are now certified with the Airports Carbon Accreditation program, making them three of the six certifed airports in North America.

The Airports Carbon Accreditation program, launched in 2009 by the European region of Airports Council, consists of airports committed to reducing carbon emissions and a goal to be carbon neutral.

The Port of Portland, which operates airports in Portland, Hillsboro and Troutdale, started the accreditation process in 2014.

Now that they are official certified, they join Montréal-Trudeau International Airport, Victoria International Airport, and Seattle-Tacoma as the only certified North American airports in the program. Over 100 airports are recognized by the program worldwide.

The Port of Portland has focused on clean air practices over the last few years. In 2008, the Port was a founding reporter to the Climate Registry, and the next year committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by15 percent below 1990 levels by 2020.

The Port has also invested in several  conservation projects, such as lighting upgrades and retrofits to heating, cooling and ventilation systems, that have saved 13,325 metric tons of carbon and 15.7 million kilowatt hours a year.
