Portland Fire and Rescue Responds to House Fire
Tuesday, November 03, 2015
Fire crews were first dispatched to a residential fire at 3542 S.E. Taylor St. at 5:21 PM on Sunday. They arrived minutes later to a fully involved house fire at the home, which neighbors say was vacant.
Firefighters began working to extinguish the fire while trying to determine whether the house was indeed empty. Crews verified that the house was empty and declared the incident under control after 20 minutes of extinguishing. There were no major injuries.
Portland Fire and Rescue identified the cause of the fire as “smoker carelessness.” According to Fire and Rescue, smoking is the leading cause of preventable home fire deaths, and about one out of four fire deaths are caused by smoking.
In order to avoid starting a smoking-related fire, Portland Fire and Rescue is asking residents to follow these fire safety tips:
- Put out all cigarettes, cigars, or pipes before you leave the room.
- Never smoke in bed.
- Use deep ashtrays. Don't put ashtrays on the arms of sofas or chairs.
- Keep matches and lighters locked up, away from children. Teach children to tell you if they find a lighter or matches.
- If smokers have visited, check floors and seat cushions for butts and ashes that may have dropped. .
