Wednesday, June 22, 2016

Matthew Joseph Nelson, 31, was the driver of the 2004 Cadillac Escalade that was involved in a serious crash with a 1998 Toyota Corolla that resulted in serious injuries to Nathaniel Drechsler on Tuesday night on NE 33rd and Killingsworth.

Nelson was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on Wednesday morning on charges of assault in the second degree, failure to perform the duties of a driver, driving under the influence of intoxicants, marijuana, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person and criminal mischief in the second degree.

Crash investigators learned that Nelson was driving northbound on 33rd Avenue at a high rate of speed prior to crashing into Drechsler. Nelson and his passenger, a 30-year-old female walked way from the crash but witnesses kept an eye on them until police arrived. The female was interviewed and released on the scene.

Crash investigators believe that Nelson was under the influence of marijuana at the time of the crash.

Drechsler remains in the hospital and is expected to survive his injuries.
