GoLoalPDX Election Night Coverage Nov. 4, 2014

Tuesday, November 04, 2014

GoLocalPDX will be covering the election live on the web and social media.  Check back to this post throughout the day and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest results on the major races.

Update: 9:50 PM: Results

Kitzhaber wins re-election

US Senator Jeff Merkley wins re-election

US Representative Earl Blumenaur wins re-election

Recreational marijuana legalization passes

Top Two Primary measure fails

Driver's cards for undocumented immigrants fails

The Oregon College Fund fails

Portland School Bond passes

Portland Public Schools passes

Update: 7:40 PM: In parts of the country that have similar measures on the ballot, Washington D.C.'s recreational marijuana referendum was ahead with 69 percent approving and 29 percent disapproving, only 11 percent of the vote was in, however. In Colorado, with 68 percent of precincts reporting, a measure to lable genetically modified foods was going down, with 68 percent voting no and 32 percent voting yes.

Update: 4:45 PM: Multnomah County reported that 56.86 percent of county voters had turned in their ballots. Washington County said 49 percent of registered voters had sent ballots.  Clackamas County posted on its website that 47.7 percent of the voters had returned their ballots.

It's hard to say what races will be completed first and who will call them.  Len Bergstein of Northwest Strategies expected most of the major ballot measures to be going late into the night

"People will probably call the driver's card measure first," Bergstein said.  "It will probably be overwhelmingly defeated."

The first wave of ballotsvcounted are usually those that have been submitted by older voters, so early results will be skewed, according to Bergstein.

6:00 AM:  Stakes are high this season, with three game-changing ballot measures that are attracting millions in campaign contributions and control of the state senate up for grabs.

It’s too late to mail your ballot in, so you’ll have to take it to a designated drop site.  You can find one closest to you by going HERE. Polls close at 8 p.m.

For More: What Factors Watch for This Election

With the state’s vote by mail system, many elections will be called within moments of the polls closing. So keep a close eye on this post and our Facebook page

As of Tuesday morning, Washington, Clackamas and Multnomah counties reported about 48 percent of voter turnout.  Voter turnout has hovered around 73 percent for the last two midterm elections.

Voter turnout will be key to the success or failure of many important campaigns, including:

  • Measure 91, to legalize recreational marijuana
  • Measure 90, the top two primary system
  • Five critical campaigns that could decide who controls the Oregon State Senate

If you suspect a friend of yours hasn’t turned his or her ballot in, you can check to see using a popular new website that uses Facebook to track people.

Check back with us as we update the post throughout the day and well into the night.

And don’t forget to vote.
