Multnomah County and Clackamas County Elections Divisions have both received 48 percent of ballots. Ballot return information for Washington County was not available as of press time.
Voter turnout for midterm elections is generally much less than during a national election.
“I get annoyed that everyone wants to vote for the presidential election," Multnomah County Voter John Gresham said. "They don’t care about local issues that impact them more.”
Voters will be decided on Measure 91, which would legalize and tax marijuana for recreational use. Polls prior to election day showed the measure in a dead heat. Voters are also deciding the fate of Measure 92 that, if passed, will make Oregon the first state to require the labeling of food containing genetically modified organisms - or GMOs. The Food and Drug Administration doesn't regulate genetically altered foods, which include vegetables that have been combined with the genetic material of an animal or with the genes of a virus, according to the Organic Consumers Assocation.
As voter Adrian Montanez said while turning in his ballot, “It’s why we live in a democracy."
Polls close at 8 PM.
