NEW: Hales Says Wheeler Should Focus on His Job in Salem
Tuesday, September 29, 2015
Though he did not specify how many debates he hoped to hold, Hales seemed to dismiss Wheeler's idea of 12 debates, telling Wheeler his focus should be on his current job of State Treasurer, rather than "the temptation to focus on the next job one wants."
Read Hales' response below:
Dear Mr. Wheeler,
Thank you for your letter regarding debates for the upcoming campaign.
As was the case in the last campaign, I am excited and looking forward to multiple debates and joint appearances in the next seven months leading up to the primary election in May 2016. There will many of them, including those scheduled and sponsored by community organizations and media outlets. I think it is important we be respectful of their civic role and planning as the entire range of appearances are considered, as well as the possibility of others entering the race.
Having said that, our campaigns can and should begin discussing how and when to integrate debates into the campaign season. Of course, my first priority is fulfilling my duties as Mayor, as yours should be fulfilling your duties in Salem. I understand the temptation to focus on the next job one wants, but our responsibility is to the job we have. In that regard, I am very proud of the progress we have made and are making on the two issues you referenced, which are the culmination of nearly three years of work with my colleagues. Of course, those who have followed the work of the City of Portland over that time know that.
My campaign will contact you to begin these discussions.
Sincerely,
Charlie Hales
