Ted Wheeler Signs Working for the People Pledge
Monday, September 21, 2015
Wheeler signed the Working for the People of Portland Pledge, which would add important new accountability measures to City Hall. The Pledge would align Wheeler more with the public and would discourage the notion that he is more invested in private business or political consultants.
The pledge says that any consultant or staff member who is paid by his campaign will also sign on to a four year prohibition on receiving money used to lobby for Wheeler on behalf of a private interest.
“Portland residents need confidence that City Hall is making decisions based on the interests of the public, not those who can buy the best access. Too often in recent years and too frequently after an issue is decided, do we learn that powerful interests were guiding that decision behind closed doors,” said Wheeler. “Today, I’m promising that my focus will be on making progress for all Portlanders, starting with rebuilding their trust in government so that we can come together to create new economic opportunities, tackle homelessness and finally fix our roads.”
If Wheeler is elected, his Mayoral staff will agree to a prohibition on lobbying him as well.
Wheeler challenges Charlie Hales to do the same.
“I’m taking this pledge because I am committed to restoring accountability and transparency at City Hall, but regardless of who wins this election, residents should know their mayor is working for them. Therefore, I hope Charlie Hales joins me and signs the Working for the People of Portland Pledge,” said Wheeler
