Right now in Oregon, anyone can purchase a gun at a garage sale. And by “anyone,” I mean those with a history of violent mental illness or criminal background. There are no background checks for these sorts of sales because so far, our legislature hasn’t had the backbone to stand up to the NRA and the Oregon Firearms Federation to get it done. It’s an absurd, frustrating situation that has our legislature on the cusp of public policy malpractice.
